What does the clean up scanner do?

Get a free PC scan!

Find and fix safety and health issues on your PC now.

The Windows Live Safety Center clean up scan will find obsolete temporary files and tell you if it’s time for you to clean up your hard disk. Removing these files not only clears up clutter on your PC, it can also help improve your computer’s performance. The clean up scan will also remove invalid registry items that can slow down your computer and cause error messages at startup.

How to run the scanner

It’s easy—just click Clean Up Scan in the Clean Up Center.

The clean up scan will check your hard disk for unnecessary temporary files and make recommendations for which ones you should delete or compress. You can then choose to follow the recommendations or customize the clean up.

The clean up scan will also check your registry for stray data left behind by applications after they’re removed. These invalid items can be removed safely, allowing your computer to run more efficiently.

What the recommendations mean

If your hard disk contains any temporary files, you’ll see a yellow shield along with the amount of temporary files.

Example of disk cleanup results

If the registry cleaner determines that you have invalid registry items to delete, it will create a system restore point and then allow you to choose to remove all the items the scanner finds or select items individually for removal.

How often should I do this?

We recommend a complete Windows Live Safety Center scan once a month, which includes the clean up scan. But if your computer is running slower than usual or doesn’t seem to be behaving, you might want to run the scanner sooner to free up hard disk space and help improve your computer’s performance.
