What does the tune up scanner do?

Get a free PC scan!

Find and fix safety and health issues on your PC now.

The Windows Live Safety Center tune up scan will look at your hard disk drive and tell you if it’s time to defragment it. Regularly defragmenting your hard disk can help optimize your computer’s performance and help it run faster.

How to run the scanner

It’s easy—just be sure to close all other open programs, then click Tune Up Scan in the Tune Up Center.

The tune up scan will then check your hard disk for its level of fragmentation and if it’s more than 10% fragmented, recommend that you defragment it. You can then choose to follow the recommendation or not. Keep in mind that defragmentation can take awhile; especially the first time you do it. You may want to do this when you don’t need to be using your computer.

What the recommendations mean

If your hard disk is less than 10% fragmented, you’ll see a green shield and no further action is necessary.
Green shield shows that defragmenting is not necessary.

If, however, your hard disk is more than 10% fragmented, you’ll see a yellow shield along with the percent of fragmentation.
Yellow shield shows that defragmenting your hard disk is recommended.

How often should I do this?

We recommend a complete Windows Live Safety Center scan once a month, which includes the tune up scan. But if your computer is running slower than usual or doesn’t seem to be behaving, you might want to run the scanner sooner to help improve your computer’s performance.
